Nashville’s Veterans Day parade takes the best street in the city. It runs the length of Broadway, from 13th Avenue down to 1st, which means the whole honky tonk strip closes for it and Metro police start shutting the surrounding blocks at half past nine in the morning. That closure time is the number that actually shapes your day. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, November 11 this year, and the 2026 details have not been posted yet. Neither have the free meals: every list you will find today is last year’s list. We checked.
The parade, and the one detail to be careful about
The route is the simplest of any parade on this network: straight down Broadway from 13th Avenue to 1st Avenue, finishing near the river. Military groups from across Middle Tennessee make up the bulk of it. The Nashville Downtown Partnership’s own listing for the most recent one put the start at 11 a.m. and the finish about three quarters of an hour later, with Metro police beginning street closures at 9.30.
Here is the detail worth being careful with. Several listings circulating for this year give the step-off as 11.11 a.m. rather than 11. The eleven-eleven start is a real tradition and plenty of cities use it, but the Downtown Partnership’s own entry for the last parade says eleven o’clock flat. Eleven minutes is not much unless it is the eleven minutes you spent parking. Until the organisers post 2026, be standing on Broadway by a quarter to eleven and the question stops mattering.
The other thing to note is the day of the week. Last year’s parade fell on a Tuesday. This year November 11 is a Wednesday, and Metro Nashville has it on its calendar as an observed holiday with most Metro offices closed.
Free meals: what is actually confirmed for 2026
Same problem, different subject. Search for Veterans Day free meals right now and you will find long lists with 2026 in the headline. Open the restaurants’ own pages and the offers are from 2025. Applebee’s Veterans Day page, as this was written in mid-September, still says the free entree is available on Tuesday, November 11, which was last year’s date.
So we are not going to publish a list of offers that no restaurant has agreed to. What we can tell you is the pattern, because it is remarkably stable. The chains that run a free Veterans Day meal have run it for years, most announce in the last week of October, and the terms rarely move: dine-in only, one meal per veteran, a limited menu to choose from, drinks and tip not included, and participating locations only, which matters if you are driving in from Murfreesboro or Hendersonville. Applebee’s has run its offer for eighteen consecutive years. Golden Corral, Texas Roadhouse, Chili’s, Denny’s, Red Robin, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans and Buffalo Wild Wings have all been regular participants.

What counts as proof of service
This is the question that actually causes trouble at the door, and the answer is broader than most people expect. Applebee’s published terms accept a Uniformed Services ID card, a Uniformed Services retired ID card, a current Leave and Earnings Statement, a veterans organization card such as American Legion or VFW, a DD214, a citation or commendation, and, simply, a photograph of yourself in uniform. Most chains use a similar list. If you served and you do not carry a card, a DD214 or a photo is usually enough. Call the specific location first, because the offer is franchise-level and the person answering the phone is the one who will be working the door.
